Words. They belong to me.

Hush. Please. Don't.

Don't caugh it up.

Thin air. Don't.

Serve them on a silver platter.

Letters. Syllables. Words.

Contaminate a smile.

Contaminate a wink.

Falsify yesterday's brushstroke.

Insult today's reality.

But. Hush. Please. Don't.

Don't touch them. The words.

Don't deprive them of their virgin birth.

They belong to me.

Their pristineness. I need it.

I need to believe in it.

Hush. Please. Don't.

I didn't ask for them.

You don't need to.

Hush. Please Don't.

Don't say white when it's black.

When you say white.

I hear white.

I see white.

Don't say West when it's East.

When you say West.

I hear West.

I head West.

Words. They belong to me.

I believe in them.

Don't convert them into strings

to make me curtsy.

Hush. Please. Don't.

Serve them on a silver platter.

I will bow down in respect.

Even before her majesty of truth.

I will bow.

But. Please. Hush. Don't.

Don't say exhale when you mean inhale.

I will suffocate.

Words. They belong to me.

Hush. Please. Don't.

Love & Anger

Yesterday I was asked to write about the wondrous matter of „Love & Anger“ for „3tongues1subject“. I have been tip-toeing around this topic for hours, have been eyeballing it from every angle but I can't grasp it. Maybe because love and anger don't constitute a common collocation in the German language. Beyond parlance they might perform as a duett but personally I never considered love and anger as an item.

Love itself I have examined to the core and to its outermost. But who hasn't? I have all the answers I need to the questions of the kinds of love I have encountered. Anger, however, is theoretically unexplored territory.

Love is practically a simple matter. Basically. For it is a feeling that either exists or not. There is no such thing as semi-love, in love there is no „somehow“, no „maybe“. You either love or don't. If your answer to the question „Do you love him, do you love her?“ isn't an ardent „yes“, for me the problem has fixed itself. It is as simple as that.

The difficult thing about love is the journey towards it, the evolution of its mature form that dwells at the bottom of your guts and that offers itself to ardour at all times. The conditions, however, that its growth involves are so individual and manifold that you cannot ponder globally about them. Every one of us has its own breeding ground for love, spiked with most different elements. One component we might share nevertheless: expectation. Expectations again are built upon a long grown concept of values and life. Affections, there are many. You can find them hanging around on every corner. But if the object of affection does not live up to our expectations, if it devalues our values or doesn't share our idea of life, the odds of love are fairly marginal.

And this is exactely the point where I can artfully bring in our friend „anger“. If anger joins the play at the moment of dashed expectations, love gets a second chance. Indifference, disinterest or a definite death sentence, rendered upon our statutes, blight love irrevocably.

Anger, however, challenges, anger screams: „Prove me wrong. Prove yourself. Reach out your hand to me.“ If our object of affection now manages to extinguish the fire, the carousel may spin on.

So anger is an abetter of love – which slowly explains why the English wed the two of them.

The form of social anger we are talking about here grows from affinity and closeness. Only when we are close, we express our disappointment with anger. Anger demonstrates our willingness to turn affection into love. And then it is for our opponent to make a step towards us, to pull the carpet out from anger's feet or to add fuel to the fire.

The strongest, most beautiful, exquisit, romantic and at the same time most unromantic kind of love, however, is the the one in which the anger exstinguishes itself due to its principal's unconditional nature. The form of love in which you love against, through and above the disappointments and expectations. Not many have the knack of loving unconditionally. Personally, I am very rarely able to do and feel so but if I do I am a true master of the discipline since this particular species of love is entirely unpretentious and grants me limitless freedom. It does neither cage nor constrain. All I need to do then is to feel, I must not hope, expect and make plans for the future, that I prefer to be unplanned by nature.

The tragical thing with unconditional love is that it is not understood as love by its recipient. The heart-rending romanticism that dwells in it is interpreted by the beloved as indifferent and indolent non-romanticism. He, she is aching for the anger, the expectations, some set limits and hurt feelings as proof of love. And for that reason unconditional love is the biggests tragedy of romance by virtue of its perfection.

For my writing Ego Melpomene is the most inspiring of all Muses, for my feeling Ego it is the most lonesome. But one experience is still missing in my history of affection – the clash of two unconditional lovers. As an advocate of freedom and feelings my personal key to romantic sustainability lies in such an encounter. For Nemesis, however, this would induce an agonising death.

So for me as a feeling being „Love & Anger“ is the most probable and common formation of love but for me as a writer it is for sure not the most desireable.

------

Dosis sola facit venenum - An Island Drowns

Lighthearted. I savour.

Exuberant. I don't mind.

Wild. I won't resist.

Unhibited. I gamble.

Befogged. I sicken.

When you ask me for a dance. I might say yes.

When you turn my head. I philander.

When you trip me up. I fall.

When you dull. I loathe.

Shattered. You debunk.

Black out. You sadden.

Oblivious. You betray.

You relax. You cheer.

You numb. You daze. You deafen.

Random. You are welcome.

Frequent. You turn nasty.

Habitual. You scare me away.

The occasion is your scepter.

The reason is your crown.

You have a million faces. You write a million stories.

You distort a million realities. You steal a million memories.

A million little deaths.

One formula.

MARK TWAIN.

March 14, 1882.

I have not had a large experience in the matter of alcoholic drinks. I find that about two glasses of champagne are an admirable stimulant to the tongue, and is, perhaps, the happiest inspiration for an after dinner speech which can be found; but, as far as my experience goes, wine is a clog to the pen, not an inspiration. I have never seen the time when I could write to my satisfaction after drinking even one glass of wine. As regards smoking, my testimony is of the opposite character. [...] I smoke with all my might, and allow no intervals.

Scribo ergo sum

Why do I write? This is a very personal question, Sir. You really get me thinking.

And that is exactly why I already have an answer dancing on the tip of my tongue or rather my fingertips.

I write because I live. In my understanding of existence, I am very close to life. With all of my senses, highly alerted to absorb in every single instant everything my environment can offer. All I am able to grasp then accumulates – after a first ad hoc selection – in my head and in my heart. Later, in one of those quiet and sensory-free moments, when the flood of impressions ceases, questions arise as well as the urge to create something sentient from the collected. And since I experience thinking as painful, I fall back on pen and paper. I am not able to think and then summarise my thoughts consecutively in writing. I think and write simultaneously. I think while writing. This is the only way for me to subsequently constructivise my world and create an existence - for me, my thoughts, my sentiments and the objects around me. Scribo ergo sum.

And the same phenomenon has happened right now. I have found the answer to your question while writing.

However, I have the feeling that there are a number of further reasons and causes for my word-juggling tendencies.

But please allow me to drop in the marginal note that to me it seems rather absurd to write about writing. Have you ever asked a painter to paint a picture about painting? Or a composer to set music itself to music?

But let's come back to your request. I am afraid I have to become a little shallow and witless in the second part of my portrayal. When trying to construct an existence for myself by writing, I get into a true frenzy – or let's call it ecstasy, euphoria. My heartbeat speeds up, and I turn into a word-desirous and explanation-addicted creature who knows no greater satisfaction than a pretty word and a full stop at the end of an article. Maybe because then I can stop thinking, and the pain of pondering eases. And also because I then have the result of my agony in front of me. Tangible. Readable. Comprehensible. Like the solution to a mathematical problem. I have created a product that I encircle with both pride and self-doubt, and that I look at again and again to examine it for aesthetics and raison d’être.

At this point I want to clarify, however, that I don’t write because I read. I write despite reading. Nothing touches me more than a sublime composition of perfect words. If on top of that their combination is reasonable and meaningful too, I burst with awe and emotional turmoil. I don’t compare myself with my masters. Not because I am modest or scared, but on principle. I am aware of the fact that my muse is not gifted enough to measure up to their lettered standards. But my muse doesn’t have to compete. She or he may simply serve as my drug to get high. My muse may assist me in existing, living and understanding the things I encounter.

So I write to think, to be and to get high.

I hope my answer is satisfactory, Sir. And I also hope that you appreciate the fact that – adhering to my own constructivist approach – now that I have written about writing, I have functionally become a writer.

And now please allow me to switch off my thinking and reasoning and switch on my senses instead, to indulge for a while in senseless being and sensory intake.

----------
Scribo ergo sum.

Mit all meinen Sinnen.
Scribo ergo sum.

Don't wanna talk about it

I would love to write. Now. About certain things, however, one does not speak. About nothingness for instance. Or about the idle state. Even less, one speaks about happiness. Happiness is corner- and edge-less. Happiness is as slippery as an eel. On happiness you slip wordlessly, and you land gently in its splendour. Happiness is an entirely unmentionable condition. Happiness has nothing to offer. It is a great sensation that won't hit the headlines. You can twist it and turn it as much as you like. And you don't rub your reader's nose in it.

Look, you, what I have got here! A gleaming piece of happiness. Yes, it is genuine. No plagiarism. No carbon copy. It grew slowly until perfection, and now it glitters so faultlessly that it spits out your own reflection. But who wants to view his own mirror image in my happiness? Even to me its nimbus appears delusive. But there is no hitch.

About the hitch, I could go on for hours with a thousand words. But about this delicate and merry matter one does not speak. Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent. Thus, I invoke my right to silence and forage deep inside myself for an inspiring companion for my happiness, who can help me disguising his unassailable friend, just for the sake of free expression. Lucky you, I can't dance.

-------------------------------

Ich würde gerne schreiben. Jetzt. Guck mal, du, was ich hier habe. Ein spiegelblankes Stück Glück. Ja, es ist echt. Kein Plagiat. Doch wer will schon sein eigenes Konterfei in meinem Glück betrachten?

Schnuppe, was du machst. Schnuppe, was du trägst. Schnuppe. Einerlei.
Ich bin zu Hause. Im Glück. Ich bin zu Hause. In London. Destination reached.

-----------------------------

Destination reached

Departure: 01.01.10
Time of arrival: 10.04.10
Travel time: 3 months, 10 days

It took me exactly 100 - one hundred - days to arrive. It hit mit like a thunderbold today. On my bike. On my way to the farmer's market around the corner in Portobello Road. I am here. Not there. I am in London. A dream has become reality. Home-made.
It were three month of turmoil. I was torn between excitement, stress, hypertension, fatigue, overzeal, enthusiasm, sensory overload, acclimatisation. Today I feel home. A home, however, that lacks the grey monotony. The fatal and brutal boredom stayed behind on the continent and may fraternise with the tedium in their Munich exile. As for me they may rot.
I am at home - boredom- and tedium-free - and it presents itself as a colourful home, in which heterogeneity, tolerance, individuality live next door to rush, hustle and bustle and big business. Roughness lives next door to patriarchal chic, elegance next to punk, cheap next to classy, culture next to culture, culture hand in hand with culture. There is room for everyone and everything. Everyone is allowed to exist and experiment. Nobody cares. Whatever.
I am at home. In luck. I am at home. In London. Future has become present. And nothing weighs heavier, is more crucial than the present. Hence only the present can be lived. It is the present alone from which we build memories and the future. I have traded my blue and white continental present for an island present. I got myself a future. Destination reached.

An Ode to Freedom / Eine Ode an die Freiheit

So, you are an emigrant. Officially. You have migrated ex patria into a country that once planted a multitude of memories into the soil of your head. Memories that jauntily blossomed away and, uncoupled from the homey and daily routine, produced a number of verdant scions . Memories that were watered by monotony and briskly practised photosynthesis in the light of frustration to finally spawn a full grown wanderlust that cast an impervious shadow onto the convenience and safety of home. And then, finally, it clicked. From one moment to the next you were willing to make sacrifices for the sake of adventure.

Life re-issued. One one way ticket please. No return.
And when you finally put your feet on the island’s ground, the adventure turned out to be a lot more than just the thrill you had envisioned. And simultaneously it turned out to be a lot less than the thrill you had envisioned.
For when dreaming up your future you forget that you stay who you are and what you are. Only the people who perceive you are new. And the backdrop around you. Your innate, acquired, adopted attributes are presented to unkown men, unknown women, unknown colleagues, unknown bosses, unknown neighbours, unknown barkeepers. In an environment that has arisen from a culture that you hadn’t tested for its suitability for daily use.
And suddenly you realise from the core of your heart who you are and what you are. You realise that life cannot be re-issued, there is no “reset to factory settings”. You realise that even in adventure you can rely on one thing: on yourself and the fact that nothing is more important than yourself and the people around you.
There is: liking, points of friction, confrontations, harmony, inspiration, fun. There is: excitement, agitation, curiosity.
And you realise that in the end these are the elements that spice up your adventure and make you get out of bed every morning with momentum and élan.
It is not about the buildings of the city. The streets. The corners. It is not about the supermarkets with the foreignly populated shelves. It’s not about the flora and not about the fauna. It is about the human beings and the foreign human language in which you express yourself differently and in which you are interpreted and understood differently. And it is about what those new people see in you. You re-discover your ego. You become visible. Audible. Through your counterpart for yourself. And in company of the people who see you, the buildings, streets and corners of this city all of a sudden taste even better than the memories.
You live, re-live, marvel and accept the challenges with sheer thirst.
Only one thing you anticipate in vain – the one very moment in which you take in and realise that you have actually arrived and reached your destination. In which you comprehend what you have left behind. Probably this one specific moment won’t ever come. Probably it will rather be a slow and gradual process that will turn a habitat into a home. And every day you will grow with the small and big challenges, and you will grow with the fact that you don’t regret the decision to have risked this step – neither in secret nor in the slightest.
Only in the first whiff of a daily routine this experience has become a true adventure and every day promises a new chapter.

------------------
